What is a LiteBlok Concrete Block?
Liteblok™ Cement Block is an aerated, molded concrete block. It is uniquely processed by introducing a non-toxic foaming agent into regular concrete leaving numerous tiny discrete air pockets within the material. The concrete blocks are laid without mortar and are interlocking and lightweight allowing for significant savings in wall construction time and cost reductions as great as 40% compared to traditional wood frame construction.
Liteblok™ Concrete Blocks are a Green building product providing many LEED credit opportunities to industry professionals. Long lasting, affordable, energy efficient homes are built with non-toxic materials that generate minimal job site waste. Potentially toxic substances such as polystyrene and fly ash are absent from our building materials. Liteblok™ can be found in residential and commercial construction. Applications for the light-weight concrete block include interior and exterior walls, fire walls, fences, sheds, and retaining walls.

Liteblok™ is a precision molded, interlocking, mortarless concrete building block that requires little skill to lay. Other significant features of Liteblok™ include the following:
Cost effective: speed and ease of construction mean significant cost savings
Insulating: air pockets provide great sound and thermal insulation
Lightweight: reduces foundation requirements and freight
Long lasting, sustainable, non-toxic "green" product
Simple to use: stack without mortar, are self-aligning, take regular nails, and can be cut with a hand saw. Also, vertical holes in blocks allow for electrical wiring and plumbing.
Strong: resistant to high winds and seismic activity
Vermin, mold, and termite resistant
Versatile: double walls, ledges, and molded-in-place fixtures are easy
The patented interlocking design and the cellular concrete used in the manufacture of Liteblok™ cement blocks are entirely unique. During construction, reinforced steel (rebar) and grout are introduced into some of the holes within the blocks to form columns. It is these columns that provide the support for the structure. The structure essentially represents a basic column and beam system with the columns and beams being made out of materials that structural engineers are already familiar with.
There are two concrete block sizes available, the standard five inch thick and the new eight inch thick Grande. We also offer two standard densities of the Liteblok™ building block. The first, Liteblok™ 38, is lightweight and has very good insulating properties. This concrete block is intended for those applications requiring thermal insulation or a low density. Our Liteblok™ 69 is a heavier cement block and is targeted at applications where abrasion resistance is important and thermal insulation and light weight are less of a priority. Besides our standard Liteblok™ versions, it is also possible to provide custom solutions including different surface textures, densities, colors, and sizes.

- Residential home construction (external and internal walls)
- Safe rooms
- Sound absorbing wall

The lightweight quality of the cement block and the discrete nature of the air pockets within are evident by the fact that our Liteblok™ 38 will float on water. Framing, fiberglass insulation, sheathing, and sheet rock can all be eliminated by using Liteblok™ 38 thereby saving time and money. Savings in heating and cooling expenses can also be achieved (see article in Links & Resources). Liteblok™ 38 exceeds the energy efficiency requirements that many municipalities require. For example, in Austin, Texas, Liteblok™ 38 offers an R-22 rating (by REScheck) as a five inch thick block with no additional insulation.
Wood frame and other traditional methods of construction tend to be very labor intensive with labor costs often being many times the cost of the materials themselves. Liteblok™ is designed to simplify and quicken construction. Our labor costs to erect a wall are typically less than 10% of the material cost. When comparing wall system costs, one should always add up the costs of all components (including labor) that make up a wall and never compare just one component such as a block (see example in News & Information). Liteblok™ 38 can be used for the construction of multi-storey structures.
Liteblok™ 38 is a green building material. Long lasting, durable and affordable structures can be built that are energy efficient, reducing heating and cooling loads. Its light weight means significantly less cement is consumed and reduced freight loads result in less energy consumption and pollution during transport. It does not rot, is not attacked by vermin, and does not absorb moisture into its bulk resulting in the need for less maintenance. Liteblok™ 38 contains no VOCs or potentially toxic substances such as fly ash and polystyrene. Heavy use of pesticide is not required prior to construction. No ozone depleting or hazardous chemicals are used during manufacture. Minimal job site waste is generated during construction. Light weight concrete absorbs sound (while dense concrete reflects sound) and significantly reduces indoor noise.

Significant cost and time savings can be had by building with Liteblok™ 69 versus bricks or conventional concrete blocks. These close fitting blocks are interlocking and self-aligning. They stack quickly without the use of mortar or highly skilled labor. Traditional building materials tend to be very labor intensive with labor costs often being as much as four times that of material costs. Liteblok™ is designed to simplify construction and eliminate much of the labor costs. When building a Liteblok™ wall, the associated labor costs are typically less than 10% of the material costs. Liteblok™ cavities (holes) are also much smaller than typical CMU (regular concrete block) openings resulting in the need for much less concrete (or grout) and rebar.
Unlike regular concrete, the unique properties of Liteblok™ allow it to withstand direct contact with flames from a fire. Liteblok™ 69 is ideal for fireplaces and outdoor barbeque pits.

Bond Beam Block
This block is used for special lintels and bond beams. A lintel is a beam above windows and doors. Lintels are only required in special cases where flat bottom Liteblok™ blocks will not suffice. A bond beam is a continuous beam, usually constructed of concrete and reinforced horizontally with rebar, on top of supporting walls. The purpose of the bond beam is to tie walls together and distribute weight evenly to the walls below. Our bond beam blocks are made of the same material and have the same physical properties as Liteblok™ 69. They are uniquely configured to be interlocking and morterless and allow for two vertically aligned and two horizontally aligned rebars. The vertical rebar from blocks below (and above) can be tied to the horizontal rebar running through the bond beam block. This allows for the bond beam block to be physically tied into the rebar vertically aligned in the blocks below (and above) creating a strong structure with evenly distributed loads.
