From its beginnings in 1893 as a single sawmill, Temple-Inland has been dedicated to manufacturing outstanding products to meet customer needs.
Temple Inland supplies solid wood lumber, gypsum board and fiberboard products for residential and commercial construction projects. Whether for new construction or remodeling, do-it-yourselfers or professionals, the expanding product line provides a range of solutions to today’s building challenges.
Temple-Inland manufactures a full line of quality gypsum board products for fast, cost-efficient wall construction in both residential and commercial applications. Available in a range of dimensions and with a choice of special performance properties, this is one of its fastest growing product lines.
Made in the U.S.A. Temple-Inland has never imported any gypsum wallboard from China. Its full line of gypsum products is manufactured at facilities that they own and operate in the United States under their high quality standards. Temple Inland has a long history in this industry and has never received any complaints similar to the ones currently in the news attributed to Chinese wallboard.
ComfortGuard water- and mold-resistant gypsum board is manufactured with the TemShield mold-protection system integrated into its facers and core. ComfortGuard’s superior surface smoothness ensures trouble-free finishing without added prep. Installation is fast, easy and efficient every time. Produced in 1/2" and fire-resistant 5/8" thicknesses, 48" and 54" widths and lengths of 8', 10', and 12', ComfortGuard is suitable for a broad range of commercial and residential applications.

In addition to the demonstrated performance properties of Temple-Inland's traditional regular and fire-resistant gypsum board products, ComfortGuard provides an enhanced water- and mold-resistant core, as well as water- and mold-resistant facers on both sides. Verified independently as per ASTM D3273*, the standard test of mold resistance, ComfortGuard featuring the TemShield mold protection system scored a 10 of a possible 10 in laboratory evaluations. Its resistance to water absorption was tested per ASTM C473.
Each ComfortGuard panel is composed of an enhanced mold- and water-resistant core with mold- and water-resistant facers on both sides. ComfortGuard features the TemShield Mold Protection system, which provides a significant degree of mold resistance compared to untreated panels.
ComfortGuard ha been tested per ASTM D3273*, the standard test of mold resistance, and scored a 10 out of a possible 10 in laboratory evaluations. Its resistance to water absorption was tested per ASTM C473.
*Note: The ASTM D3273 lab test may not be applicable to the actual performance of building materials. No material may be labeled mold proof, and resistance to mold growth depends on many factors. Prolonged exposure to moisture may cause mold and mildew to grow on any surface. Therefore, in order to maximize the mold and mildew resistance of a material, it is essential that good design, handling and construction practices be implemented. This involves avoiding water exposure during all phases of storage, handling, shipping, installation and after installation is complete. See GA238 for more information.
This material has been fire tested in accordance with the requirements of ASTM E119 and therefore may provide a fire rating of one or more hours, depending on the system in which it is applied. Because ASTM procedures require that fire tests be conducted on complete building assemblies/systems and not just on the board itself, the ability of any particular 5/8" Type X gypsum board to pass a specific ASTM fire test may well depend on factors other than the fire resistance of the gypsum board being tested. These factors include the other components used to construct the building system being tested, the manner in which the system is constructed and the inherent variability of ASTM fire tests. See our Fire-Resistant Gypsum Board page for more information.
Temple-Inland gypsum board products are third-party certified by Materials Analytical Services, LLC (MAS) to meet the performance standard established for low-emitting materials under the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) Program.
In emissions level testing for carbon disulfide and carbonyl sulfide conducted by Materials Analytical Services (MAS), Temple-Inland gypsum board was determined to be negative for sulfur off-gassing and is not considered a problematic corrosive drywall type.
Gypsum board should be carried, never dragged, to prevent damaging the finished edges. When storing gypsum boards, store them indoors and protect them from weather and direct sunlight. Boards should be stored lying flat and neatly stacked. Care should be taken to prevent sagging or damage to edges, ends and surfaces. Placing boards against framing is not recommended.
The use of certified Temple-Inland gypsum board can contribute toward credits in the following green construction rating system categories.
ComfortGuard water- and mold-resistant gypsum board manufactured in West Memphis, Arkansas, Fletcher, Oklahoma, and Cumberland City, Tennessee, has been certified by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) in accordance to ISO 14021 standards to contain a minimum of 93% recycled material on a dry-weight basis.
