Title: Fiberglass-Faced Gypsum Tile Backer Board

Temple Inland's Gypsum Boards

From its beginnings in 1893 as a single sawmill, Temple-Inland has been dedicated to manufacturing outstanding products to meet customer needs.

Temple Inland supplies solid wood lumber, gypsum board and fiberboard products for residential and commercial construction projects. Whether for new construction or remodeling, do-it-yourselfers or professionals, the expanding product line provides a range of solutions to today’s building challenges.

Temple-Inland manufactures a full line of quality gypsum board products for fast, cost-efficient wall construction in both residential and commercial applications. Available in a range of dimensions and with a choice of special performance properties, this is one of its fastest growing product lines.

Eco-Friendly Drywall

Made in the U.S.A. Temple-Inland has never imported any gypsum wallboard from China. Its full line of gypsum products is manufactured at facilities that they own and operate in the United States under their high quality standards. Temple Inland has a long history in this industry and has never received any complaints similar to the ones currently in the news attributed to Chinese wallboard.

GreenGlass® Fiberglass-Faced Gypsum Tile Backer Board

GreenGlass tile backer, a fiberglass-faced gypsum board, is a strong, water-resistant substrate for the application of tile in high-moisture, high-humidity commercial and residential environments. Superior for walls, ceilings, shower and tub enclosures, countertops and light flooring, GreenGlass tile backer features a built-in, moisture-blocking coating over naturally mold- and moisture-resistant fiberglass facers laminated to a specially formulated water-resistant core. GreenGlass tile backer also offers a standard-setting 90% certified recycled content that can contribute toward credits in multiple green building rating systems.

Benefits
GreenGlass tile backer is as tough as it is green. GreenGlass delivers powerful moisture and mold protection plus an impressive level of recycled content that can give you a serious advantage towards environmental certification without sacrificing performance.

Superior Mold and Moisture Resistance
In addition to the natural mold resistance of its glass mat facers, GreenGlass tile backer features an acrylic coating to block moisture at the surface as well as the TemShield Mold Protection System engineered into its enhanced gypsum core.

High Green Building System Value
Manufactured with an SCS-certified recycled material content of at least 90%, GreenGlass can contribute significant credits towards a project’s green rating system certification.

Code-Compliant Substrate
GreenGlass is IRC and IBC compliant to the referenced standards for a fiberglass mat water-resistant gypsum substrate for use as a tile backer. It has also passed ceramic tile bonding strength testing to verify compliance with the Uniform Building Code.

Low VOC Emissions
Certified to meet the performance standard established for low VOC-emitting materials under the CHPS program, GreenGlass has also been shown to be free of sulfur emissions which has resulted in odor and pipe corrosion in some regions of the country.

Added Fire Resistance
Because it’s a gypsum board product, GreenGlass tile backer is naturally noncombustible. It’s also available with a Type X core formula for added protection and U.L.-approved use in multiple fire-rated assemblies.

Easier to Install and Handle
Improved fiberglass encapsulation makes it easier to handle than other glass mat products. It's lighter and easier to install than cement board and features an acrylic-coated surface that acts as a built-in moisture barrier to save you an extra step.

GYPSUM BOARD PROPERTIES

Limitations:

  • For interior use only
  • Should not be used as a shower pan base or in shower floors or curbs
  • Avoid installation where prolonged exposure to temperatures exceeding 125° F (52° C) required
  • Should not be used as a base for nailing and mechanical fastening
  • Framing spacing should not exceed 16" (406 mm) o.c. without blocking or 24" (610 mm) o.c. with blocking
  • Do not apply directly to concrete or block; framing or furring required
  • Do not apply with construction adhesives alone; nails, screws or staples alone acceptable or combined with adhesive
  • Avoid installing vapor retarders directly behind GreenGlass in new construction or penetrate existing coverings that may act as a retarder in retrofit applications

Mold and Moisture Resistance:

Produced with the TemShield Mold Protection System engineered into its gypsum core, GreenGlass tile backer is faced on both sides with naturally mold-resistant fiberglass mats. This combination has been shown to be highly mold resistant when tested as per ASTM D3273.

In addition, the water-resistant core of GreenGlass combined with its acrylic surface coating is designed to dramatically reduce wicking and moisture pass-through compared to cementitious backer panels. Moisture is stopped at the surface to resist build up and damage within the wall cavity.

Fire Resistance:

Tested in accordance with ASTM E136, GreenGlass 5/8” (15.9 mm) Type X tile backer may provide a fire-resistance rating of 1 or more hours depending upon the assembly in which it is applied. Tile installation is not required to achieve the fire-resistance rating. GreenGlass is a U.L.-classified substrate and can replace a 5/8” (15.9 mm) Type X gypsum board in most fire-rated assemblies. See important Fire Safety Information regarding gypsum board standards, testing and certification.

Low VOC-Emitting Material:

Temple-Inland gypsum board products are third-party certified by Materials Analytical Services, LLC (MAS) to meet the performance standard established for low-emitting materials under the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) Program.

Sulfur Emissions Testing:

In emissions level testing for carbon disulfide and carbonyl sulfide conducted by Materials Analytical Services (MAS), Temple-Inland gypsum board was determined to be negative for sulfur off-gassing and is not considered a problematic corrosive drywall type.

Storage:

Gypsum board should be carried, never dragged, to prevent damaging the finished edges. When storing gypsum boards, store them indoors and protect them from weather and direct sunlight. Boards should be stored lying flat and neatly stacked. Care should be taken to prevent sagging or damage to edges, ends and surfaces. Placing boards against framing is not recommended.

Environmental Certification

GreenGlass is SCS certified in accordance with ISO 14021 standards to have over 90 percent recycled content on a dry-weight basis.

LEED-NC: MR credit 4 Recycled Content awards 1 or 2 points for using products with recycled content that constitute at least 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total value of project materials.
MR credit 5 Local/Regional Materials awards 1 or 2 points for using materials on a project that are extracted and manufactured within 500 miles that constitute at least 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total value of project materials.
NAHB Green Building Standards: NAHB 604.1(2) Pre-Consumer Recycled Content specifies the use of recycled content products in major areas such as walls, floors, insulation and roofing.
2009 LEED for Schools: IEQ credit 4.6 Ceiling and Wall Systems awards 1 point if all gypsum board meets the testing and product requirements of the California Department of Health Services Standard Practice for the Testing of Volatile Organic Emissions.
