Title - Fire-resistant interior Gypsum board

Temple Inland's Gypsum Boards

From its beginnings in 1893 as a single sawmill, Temple-Inland has been dedicated to manufacturing outstanding products to meet customer needs.

Temple Inland supplies solid wood lumber, gypsum board and fiberboard products for residential and commercial construction projects. Whether for new construction or remodeling, do-it-yourselfers or professionals, the expanding product line provides a range of solutions to today’s building challenges.

Temple-Inland manufactures a full line of quality gypsum board products for fast, cost-efficient wall construction in both residential and commercial applications. Available in a range of dimensions and with a choice of special performance properties, this is one of its fastest growing product lines.

Made in the U.S.A.

Temple-Inland has never imported any gypsum wallboard from China. Its full line of gypsum products is manufactured at facilities that they own and operate in the United States under their high quality standards. Temple Inland has a long history in this industry and has never received any complaints similar to the ones currently in the news attributed to Chinese wallboard.

Interior Drywall

Our regular gypsum board is the foundation for beautiful walls. That’s because it offers an easy-to-work-with, smooth, consistent surface. Manufactured in a range of dimensions, it is an efficient, affordable, lightweight material for both remodeling and new construction.

1⁄4" - A lightweight, low-cost gypsum board used to form curved surfaces, cover old wall and ceiling surfaces, and as a base layer for improving sound control in double layer steel and wood stud partitions.
3⁄8" - A lightweight, low-cost gypsum board used in double wall systems over wood framing. Also used for repair and remodeling of residential and commercial construction.
1⁄2" - A lightweight, low-cost gypsum board used extensively in residential construction.

Regular gypsum board also provides some fire resistance. When exposed to flames, the natural moisture contained in the gypsum core is slowly released as steam, effectively retarding heat transmission.

Stretch54 Wide Gypsum Board

Six inches wider than a standard 48" gypsum board panel, Stretch54 reduces the number of joints in nine-foot walls for a smoother surface, critical for today's thinner wallpapers and new no-texture finishes. That’s because two standard-width boards come up one foot short when hanging panels on nine-foot walls. A one-foot filler strip must be used to complete the wall, which also adds an additional joint to tape and float.

Interior Fire-Resistant Gypsum Board

Sometimes a wall or ceiling needs to do more than just look beautiful. That's why we manufacture fire-resistant gypsum board. By supplementing regular gypsum board's natural fire resistance with glass fibers and other additives, our fire-resistant products proudly carry the Underwriter Laboratories' stamp of approval (U.L. file #R6937) without sacrificing the smooth, consistent surface and workability our standard board has always offered.

In addition, our fire-resistant gypsum board product line consists of both Type-X panels and improved Type TG-C panels produced in a range of dimensions as well as a number of other product options to provide performance enhancements to suit a range of specialty applications.

Limitations:

  • Designed for interior use only
  • Avoid exposure to prolonged, excessive temperatures: 125°F (52°C)
  • Avoid exposure to excessive or continuous moisture
  • Must be protected from direct exposure to weather and properly supported to prevent sag
  • Should be stored, handled and installed to comply with industry standards GA216 & ASTM C840

Low VOC-Emitting Material:

Temple-Inland gypsum board products are third-party certified by Materials Analytical Services, LLC (MAS) to meet the performance standard established for low-emitting materials under the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) Program.

Sulfur Emissions Testing:

In emissions level testing for carbon disulfide and carbonyl sulfide conducted by Materials Analytical Services (MAS), Temple-Inland gypsum board was determined to be negative for sulfur off-gassing and is not considered a problematic corrosive drywall type.

Storage:

Gypsum board should be carried, never dragged, to prevent damaging the finished edges. When storing gypsum boards, store them indoors and protect them from weather and direct sunlight. Boards should be stored lying flat and neatly stacked. Care should be taken to prevent sagging or damage to edges, ends and surfaces. Placing boards against framing is not recommended.

Fire Resistance of 5/8" Type X Panels:

This material has been fire tested in accordance with the requirements of ASTM E119 and therefore may provide a fire rating of one or more hours, depending on the system in which it is applied. Because ASTM procedures require that fire tests be conducted on complete building assemblies/systems and not just on the board itself, the ability of any particular 5/8" Type X gypsum board to pass a specific ASTM fire test may well depend on factors other than the fire resistance of the gypsum board being tested. These factors include the other components used to construct the building system being tested, the manner in which the system is constructed and the inherent variability of ASTM fire tests. See our Fire-Resistant Gypsum Board page for more information.

Environmental Certification

The use of certified Temple-Inland gypsum board can contribute toward credits in the following green construction rating system categories.

Recycled Content: Temple-Inland fire-resistant gypsum board manufactured in West Memphis, Arkansas, Fletcher, Oklahoma, and Cumberland City, Tennessee, has been certified by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) in accordance to ISO 14021 standards to contain a minimum of 93% recycled material on a dry-weight basis.

LEED-NC: MR credit 4 Recycled Content awards 1 or 2 points for using products with recycled content that constitute at least 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total value of project materials.
MR credit 5 Local/Regional Materials awards 1 or 2 points for using materials on a project that are extracted and manufactured within 500 miles that constitute at least 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total value of project materials.
NAHB Green Building Standards: NAHB 604.1(2) Pre-Consumer Recycled Content specifies the use of recycled content products in major areas such as walls, floors, insulation and roofing.
2009 LEED for Schools: IEQ credit 4.6 Ceiling and Wall Systems awards 1 point if all gypsum board meets the testing and product requirements of the California Department of Health Services Standard Practice for the Testing of Volatile Organic Emissions.
